What a breast reduction is
Unlike most other procedures in plastic surgery, it is not considered a cosmetic, but a reconstructive medical necessity.
Large breasts cause various issues:
- Chronic back, shoulder and neck pain. It is a painful experience for women who suffer from this issue, even when wearing a bra.
- Difficulty fitting into clothes.
- Difficulty exercising.
- Skin irritation under the breasts.
- Difficulty in breast imaging scans and detecting suspicious findings.
Breast reduction is the ideal solution for these problems.
This procedure refines the shape of the breasts in proportion to your body. The objective is to create smaller, firm, lifted and timeless breasts.
Women 18 years and over are eligible for breast reduction surgery. Typically, patients should wait 8-12 months after breastfeeding.
How breast reduction is performed
Breast reduction is performed under general anaesthesia.
Before the procedure, a detailed medical history is obtained, and preoperative check-up and imaging tests of the breast are performed.
Excess skin, fat and mammary glands are removed from the natural breast. Meanwhile, the remaining breast is repositioned in such a way that allows:
- Lifting of the underlying breast.
- Nipple repositioning.
The procedure is usually performed with anchor-shaped incisions. That is:
- An incision around the areola.
- A vertical incision.
- A horizontal incision under the inframammary fold.
However, Dr Georgopoulos can reduce your breasts without the horizontal incision, owing to his long-standing expertise in breasts and knowledge of all the available techniques.
To this end, liposuction is used in combination.
In some cases, liposuction may be the only treatment required for breast reduction, causing less scarring.
