What a rhinoplasty is

The nose is the focal point of the face. Possible flaws or asymmetries may impact negatively your image and self-esteem.

The rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is one of the most common procedures in plastic surgery. It corrects cosmetic disfigurements, as well as anatomical abnormalities of the nose. This improves the appearance and function of the nose (functional rhinoplasty).

The reasons patients undergo rhinoplasty include:

  • Saddle nose
  • Deviated nasal septum
  • Asymmetric nostrils
  • Disproportionate length in all dimensions
  • Respiratory problems

Before you undergo nasal surgery, you should have realistic expectations as to the feasible results. A rhinoplasty must be planned driven by some fundamental principles:

  • The nose must look natural.
  • The intervention should not be noticeable.
  • The main functions should be restored, such as respiration and sense of smell.

How a rhinoplasty is performed

Before the surgery, a detailed medical history and preoperative photos are taken to plan the procedure, as well as to compare postoperatively. The necessary preoperative check-up is also performed.

There are two techniques used in rhinoplasty: the closed and the open. Both techniques may also address any issues causing difficulty breathing, such as saddle nose and lower nasal turbinate hypertrophy.

Closed rhinoplasty

During a closed rhinoplasty, which is the most common procedure, incisions are made inside the nose. With this method, the nasal structure is refined, in order to take the ideal shape. At the end, a small splint is placed over the nose.

This technique has the advantages of internal nasal incisions and reduced recovery time. However, it does not correct certain cosmetic disfigurements and, as a result, it increases the rate of revision procedure.

Open rhinoplasty

During an open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made beneath the tip of the nose. The doctor reshapes the nasal skeleton (bone and cartilage) so as to refine it. Then, the incision is closed with small sutures and a splint is placed over the nose.

The main advantage of this technique is the broad exposure of the nasal structure, which results in the correction of any cosmetic or functional problems.

What happens after the procedure

After the procedure, ice packs should be used to reduce oedema.

For a few days, you must hold your head elevated and avoid unnecessary activities.

After approximately 7 days, the splint is removed and you may return to work.

The oedema remains for approximately 2-3 weeks, whereas the end result is visible after 5-6 months.

What the possible complications of a rhinoplasty are

Some of the possible complications are minor bleeding, mild pain in the area or headache, which are easily treated.

Also, in the first days, there is some bruising and oedema. More rarely, there may be functional deformities.

We will provide detailed information of the possible complications and advise you on how to avoid and manage them.
