Facial nerve paresis may cause various symptoms on the face, not only in terms of movement, but also aesthetically. At Geoplasty Plastic Surgery, we offer guidance and the most advanced methods to treat facial nerve paralysis, depending on the extent of the problem.

What facial nerve paresis is

Facial nerve paresis or paralysis is a very difficult condition for a patient. It results in facial paresis and may cause a plethora of symptoms on the face, mainly in movement (inability of facial muscles to move), as well as sensory (taste disorders).

The damage may be caused by:

  • Congenital disorders (Mobius).
  • Vascular disorders.
  • Degenerative diseases of the CNS.
  • Infectious agents (herpes viruses).
  • Idiopathic factors (Bell’s palsy).
  • Neoplasms (parotid, middle ear, etc.).
  • Iatrogenic factors (after a facelift or parotidectomy).

Depending on the cause and the position of the damage (main or peripheral), respective symptoms are manifested, such as drooping mouth corner, inability to close the eyelid, unilateral ptosis of the face, etc.

How facial nerve paresis is treated

Proper diagnosis has a primary role in the treatment of facial nerve paralysis. This is based mainly on the medical history and physical examination, but it is possible that imaging tests may also be required.

In most minor cases, the initial treatment is pharmaceutical. Recovery is complete.

In non-extensive chronic cases of facial nerve paresis, the desired symmetry of the face may be achieved with simple, injectable treatments, such as botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid.

In more difficult situations, complex surgical procedures are required to transfer free tissue (nerves and muscle grafts), using microsurgery techniques. This service may only be provided by a plastic surgery specialist, such as Dr Georgopoulos.
