What oral cavity tumours are

The oral cavity may manifest all types of tumours, benign and malignant. Malignant oral cavity tumours are common types of cancer mainly caused, separately but mainly combined, by:
  • Smoking.
  • Alcohol.
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV).
Approximately 90% of oral cavity tumours relate to squamous cell carcinomas (SCC). They are more common after 40 for both men and women. They may affect vital functions, such as breathing, eating, swallowing and speaking. If not treated early, the squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity may have serious implications on the life of patients, especially when extensive surgical removal is required.
