Abdominoplasty

An abdominoplasty, sometimes called a tummy tuck, is intended to provide a flatter abdomen for the patient. The procedure can involve the removal of excess skin and fatty deposits to provide a better shape around the abdomen area, and an overall more contoured and toned appearance to the body.

Abdominoplasty is a common procedure for both men and women who are unhappy with their waist area. This is a common solution for those want a slimmer waist, tighter and smoother skin around the abdomen, elimination of stretch marks and a more youthful overall look.

Dr. Georgopoulos is a specialist in the area of abdominoplasty. He is at the forefront of modern techniques in the field, and he has extensive experience in performing these surgeries. He knows that no two patients are the same and will consult with you to determine the abdominoplasty procedure that is right for you.

The Procedure

An abdominoplasty can take as little as two and as much as five hours to complete, depending on the extent of the surgery necessary. Smaller procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis, while more extensive procedures may require an overnight stay.

With this procedure, Dr. Georgopoulos will make an incision from hip to hip and another to the navel. This second incision might not be necessary with a smaller and less intrusive procedure. The incisions allow Dr. Georgopoulos to view the underlying structure and shape the tissue. Fatty deposits may be removed at this point, possibly using liposuction techniques. He will also manipulate the skin to tighten it around the abdomen.

At the end of the procedure, the incisions are stitched as unobtrusively as possible. The scarring will be made as unnoticeable as possible using the natural folds of the body. The procedure will vary depending on the patient, and Dr. Georgopoulos is experienced in all the techniques necessary to carry out a successful procedure.

After the Abdominoplasty

The surgery may be carried out on an outpatient basis or it may require an overnight stay. You will need someone in either case to bring you home and stay with you for a day or two.

There is likely to be some pain after the abdominoplasty, and pain medication will be prescribed to alleviate this. You might also have to have a drain at the surgery area for a day or two to remove excess fluid.

There will be some swelling and bruising after the procedure, which will lessen in the days afterwards. A compression garment might be required to help with this and with healing in general.

Staff will outline a full aftercare program for you, including instructions on how active you will need to be, and you should follow this closely.

Side Effects

Side effects with abdominoplasty are rare but as with all surgeries, infection and complications such as blood clots can occur. The side effects from this surgery will be minimised by following your aftercare program closely and by maintaining contact with the Geoplasty Center.
