The skin around the eyes is very thin and sensitive, so the eyelids are often the first parts of our faces to show signs of aging. As the skin around the eyes ages, it begins to sag, which can result in loose skin on the upper eyelids and fatty deposits below the eyes. This can lead to you looking more tired and older than you feel.
With blefaroplasty, Dr. Georgopoulos tightens loose skin and removes eye bags, wrinkles and crow’s feet to give your eyes a more rested appearance and, consequently, a younger look.
Dr. Georgopoulos is highly experienced in this area and is an expert aesthetician. As all patients are different and have different requirements, you should consult with him before deciding which blefaroplasty procedure is best for you.
Before surgery, the skin around the eyes is cleansed and local anesthetic is applied. Dr. Georgopoulos makes small, careful incisions in the creases of your upper eyelids and below the lashes of your lower lids. He then removes any excess tissue or fat that causes sagginess of the skin. When he has finished the procedure, he will close the incisions with fine stitches and apply a medical dressing. Your eyes are then lubricated to ensure your comfort.
For some patients, Dr. Georgopoulos may recommend a transconjunctival blefaroplasty. This technique involves making an incision inside the lower eyelid to remove fat and will result in no scarring. As with all procedures, different techniques may be recommended depending on the patient.
Most procedures take approximately two hours, and you should be able to go home afterwards.
After the Blefaroplasty
Following your surgery, you will need help getting home and will also need help managing your daily routines for a couple of days. The recovery time after eyelid surgery can be up to 10 days. During this time, your eyes may feel tight or swollen and you might experience discomfort. Dr. Georgopoulos will prescribe medication to help you manage pain. You will need to keep your head elevated for several days and apply ice packs to keep any swelling down.
Dr. Georgopoulos will advise on how to best manage your post-procedure well-being.
Side effects from eyelid surgery are uncommon but can include infection, bleeding, bruising, dry eyes and swelling. These side effects, if the happen, do not usually last long.
You should ensure to ask Dr. Georgopoulos about possible side effects and the best way to avoid them during your consultation.
