Because the nose is your face’s central feature, imperfections or imbalances can have a negative effect on your self-image. At Geoplasty, our corrective nose procedures can help to shape your nose more aesthetically in line with your facial features. Because everyone, and every nose, is different, a consultation to decide on the best course of action is strongly recommended.
Rhinoplasty is a procedure that changes the appearance of a nose that may not be in harmony with the other facial features because of its size or shape.
Patients often choose nose surgery to correct their nose if they feel its size or shape throws off the balance of their face or that it does not blend well with their other facial features.
In some cases, Dr. Georgopoulos can suggest another facial procedure that will bring align your facial features. However, if you undergo nose surgery, you should be healthy, non-smoking for at least ten weeks and have realistic expectations for what the procedure can achieve.
There are two techniques for performing nose surgery – open or closed. With a closed rhinoplasty, which is the most common, an incision is made inside the nostrils. With this method, Dr. Georgopoulos is able to see the underlying structures of the nose and can mold the cartilage to form the ideal nose shape. Some cartilage may also need to be removed. When your the right shape is achieved, the incisions are closed with small sutures and a packing is applied to the nose.
With an open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made in the crease below the nose. Then Dr. Georgopoulos will mold or remove cartilage to improve the shape of the nose. The incision will then be closed with small sutures and a packing is applied to the nose.
With both techniques, a splint may be used to maintain the shape of the nose. All patients are different, so Dr. Georgopoulos will advise on which is the best procedure for your nose.
After the Rhinoplasty
After your surgery, you will have to use an ice pack to control any swelling. You may experience a dull pain and headache. Dr. Georgopoulos will prescribe pain medication if necessary. You will also need to keep your head elevated and avoid unnecessary activity for a few days. You will need to avoid any activity that puts your nose in danger of impact for a few weeks after the procedure.
Nasal packing will be removed after one or two days, and after ten days or so all stitching splints can be removed.
Very few side effects are associated with rhinoplasty, although there can be some bleeding or infection, both of which are easily treated. You should avoid blowing your nose in the weeks after the procedure. You should also expect some bruising or swelling for the first few days after the procedure. The staff at the Geoplasty Center will advise you on to manage any side effects you experience.
